Romanian Institute for Adult Education


IREA was established as a non-profit institution, as a pedagogic research institute in the field of adult and continuing education, aiming to provide scientific and methodological support for all the adult education institutions in Romania, in order to make a more efficient link between academics and practitioners acting for the education of adults. IREA’s mission is to contribute towards the development of research and practice in the field of adult and continuing education nationally and at a European level and to professionalize adult educators in Romania.

The main research directions within IREA are: professionalisation of adult educators, impact of new media on adult learning, inter-generational learning and active aging, developing the concept for different support services, innovative didactics and delivery, workplace learning and key competences, social inclusion and active citizenship through education. 
IREA has been developing projects of research – development – innovation together with partners from most of the European countries. IREA is involved in more than 25 international projects on different subjects, covering issues such us: the development of the concept of different services provided to adults (career counselling, networking in adult education, validation of prior learning, socio-educational services for elderly); carrying out diagnosis and synthesis research studies concerning the development in different areas of adult education.

IREA is organising different scientific events. For instance, IREA is coordinating the national conferences on adult education.
IREA has published more than 15 books on different issues in adult education and is the coordinator of the publication series Theoretical approaches in adult education, Praxis in adult education, Methodological Support. IREA is also co-publisher of the Journal of Educational Sciences (, edited by Educational Sciences Department, Faculty of Sociology and Psychology, West University of Timisoara. 

IREA is an authorised Centre of professional competences evaluation and certification for trainers and trainers of trainers.
